Exploration
Saudi Aramco discovered a new gas field in the Arabian Gulf in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The Karan-6 well, which is the first well to target gas in Karan field, was tested on April 15. The well flowed 40 million cubic feet of gas per day from an open hole test conducted over the Khuff-A reservoir at a depth of 10,888 feet. The wellhead flowing pressure was 5,033 psi on a 38/64 inch choke. The flow is limited by test string capacity.
Under normal production completion, the well is estimated to flow at a significantly higher rate that could reach at least 80 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Three more Khuff reservoirs (Khuff-B, C and D) remained to be evaluated and tested by this well, where logs indicate hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs of excellent quality, expected to flow at at least a similar rate when tested. The pre-Khuff clastics is also a target in this well and will be penetrated and evaluated.
Karan-6 is located in an offshore area, about 160 kilometers north of Dhahran.
